FLATPICKIN.COM Discussion Forum Help

How Do I Use The Forum?

It really is very intuitive. You have a menu from which to choose your display options. Try out the different options on the menu. You'll see what the various functions can do for you. It's all right there. You can view the forum any way you like.

Javascript and Cookies

FLATPICKIN.COM relies on Javascript to perform many tasks. If you do not have Javascript enabled in your browser, you need to enable it in order for the site to work properly. There's no "Big Brother" stuff going on here - we just use Javascript to navigate around and it also works in conjunction with our style sheets which give The Fret it's look and feel.

FLATPICKIN.COM also hands your browser a cookie. It is a non-invasive cookie in that we are not getting information from you, rather we are handing you information. The cookie is not neccesary to view The Fret and you don't need to accept it if you don't want to. However, future functionality will not be available to you if you choose not to accept the cookie.

A Note On Link Colors

The link colors will change to blue when you change the view options to anything other than "All Messages". I do not know why this is. To see the links that you have already read, you need to view the forum in this mode. I will continue to research this behavior until I find the answer. For the time being you will just have to live with it that way. Sorry!

Update
I figured out why the link colors don't change in any mode other than "All". It is because there is a timestamp in the url of the messages in any mode other than that one. The timestamp is in seconds so unless you can switch back in less than a second, the link is considered by your browser to be un-viewed. The timestamp is necessary in order to view those messages considered to be within the date range you specifiy when you choose your viewing options. What's new today will not be new tomorrow. In fact, it may not be new a second from now!

Posting links to images, wav's, mp3's and other sites

Here is a brief tutorial on how to properly create an HTML link:

IMAGES
Images must reside on the web somewhere, in other words, they must have a URL of their own. If you know the url and are sure of it, you create the link as follows:

<img src="insert_your_image_url_here">

Now the tricky part, it seems, is getting the image url. If you are looking at a web page with an image on it, the address of the page is NOT the address of the image. You must drill down further. In IE, right-click the image and look at it's properties. You will see the url of the image there. It will end in either ".jpg" or ".gif". If it doesn't, then it is an image which is generated from another source and chances are it cannot be linked. In Netscape, right-click the image and choose "View Image". The address that shows up in Netscape's address bar is the address of the image. The same rule applies with respect to the file name. Again, if it doesn't end in one of the two aforementioned file extensions, it probably can't be linked.

Site Links
To link another site you simply go to that site and copy the address from the browser's address bar into the text of your link. For instance, if you wanted place a link to Yahoo.com in a message, you would create the links like this:

<a href="http://www.yahoo.com">LINK TITLE</a>

This is the format that you would use to link a wav file also.

Forum Etiquette

This is a touchy subject. So many different people post here that it is impossible to generalize on what is considered rude behavior. Simply, don't say anything to or about someone you wouldn't want said to or about youreself. If you're making a joke, use the litte "emoticons" such as :-) or some such. This will alert people to the fact that you're trying to be funny and not rude. If you post a message, say "TIA" - "thanks In Advance" at the end of your message. This way it is understood that you are thankful for the answer(s) you receive and you don't have to go back and post "Thank You" messages to every single person who responds. And don't demand answers. People hate that! If no one answers your post it's not because they don't like you. It's because they don't have anything to say about that particular subject or that no one knows the answer to your question. Don't take it personally!

Don't use filthy language here. I won't have it and your post will be deleted immediately. Some words are swear-words depending on the context in which they are used. We're all adults - we can figure this one out.

And folks, if you have a beef with someone on the forum, please take it off the board and into another more personal form of communication.

In short, be polite and respectful of others just like you would be in person. Oh, and try to keep your subject lines short and concise!
